Richmond Members open their doors to Youth on Course

Richmond Country Club isn’t the easiest place to find but don’t tell that to the 25 youth currently learning life skills, goal-setting, nutrition and golf at one of Northern California’s oldest clubs. Richmond Country Club and its members have opened their doors to Youth on Course and a mix of community partners that have come together to provide a better future to area youth. What started in the fall of 2011 as an experiment in the local community has turned into a program for youth that not only the community is excited about but also the Richmond Country Club members.

"More than teaching golf, Youth on Course teaches responsibility, discipline, courtesy and respect for others. We are fortunate at RCC to focus on golf and to assist in the lives of our local youth," said Mac Niven, the club’s general manager.

Like other area sites, participants are given a set curriculum delivered in a fun yet structured setting and occasionally offered the chance to attend unique events. Due to the generosity of Chevron, participants traveled to the STEM ZONE, Chevron’s corporate hospitality tent turned education center at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

The Richmond members also know the value the clinic brings to the community as the club generated contributions to support the clinic totaling $8,000. With access to golf, internships and college scholarships all opportunities for participants in the years to come, the next generation of Richmond community leaders are at Richmond Country Club every Thursday afternoon.

Patrick Quinn Takes the Reigns as Board President

Patrick Quinn was recently nominated as board president of the NCGA Foundation - Youth on Course. Paul Morton had served as president the previous four years and significantly increased the scope of Youth on Course.

Quinn has served as an officer the past two years and has been on the Foundation board since 2006 and NCGA board since 2007. The San Jose native has been instrumental in the creation and growth of the Honorary Board of Directors, Youth on Course clinics at San Jose Country Club and expansion of the Foundation’s donor base.

"I am proud to serve as president and look forward to providing increased opportunities for at-risk youth through our Youth on Course program," said Quinn.

Cache Creek Resort and Yocha Dehe Golf Course will host the 6th annual Youth on Course invitational June 7-8. The event, which raises more than $100,000 annually for the Youth on Course program, is a way for both corporations and individuals to come together in support of at-risk youth. Proceeds from the invitational have supported community partnerships with organizations such as La Familia Counseling Center and The First Tee of Greater Sacramento. Elected officials from all parties in Sacramento come together for the annual gathering with past corporate support from Comcast, CCPOA, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. among others.
