More than 20 introductory clinics were conducted for youth over the past six months. Participants in these clinics have had little exposure to such opportunities and most had never seen a golf course. The Foundation’s goal is to bring more than 70 clinics to hundreds of deserving youth over the next year. The instruction will be a basis for teaching life skills and core values to youth in underserved communities. Our hope is that this will provide a platform to give kids the confidence to succeed in school and in life. Read more about clinics offered earlier in 2009.

San Jose State University Clinic - November 7, 2009

Eighteen members of Seaside's Friendship Baptist Church took part in a clinic presented by the San Jose State University golf team and head coach John Kennaday at Poppy Hills.  Kennaday led the instruction on the back side of Poppy Hills driving range.

Team members helping with instruction included Northern California natives Justin Estrada (Yuba City), Drew Nottenkamper (Pacific Grove), Daniel Semmler (Belmont), Miguel Camitoc (Hayward) and Peter Gibbs (Granite Bay). There were three 30-minute stations for instruction: full swing, chipping, bunker, with the bunker station representing the first time students had ever hit out of a bunker.

The last 30 minutes were spent bringing it all together – with life skills such as perseverance and staying in school and working toward goals emphasized. Coach Kennaday explained that the golf team members all started at the same point as the clinic participants, but they worked hard to get where they are so they could play for fun and go to school on scholarship. Team members also demonstrated different golf shots…hitting shots of varying height with the same club, hitting a draw vs. hitting a cut and many more.

The kids all received a SJSU logo ball at the conclusion of the event which was the fifth such clinic presented by the Foundation in 2009. Read more about the other clinics.
